How to store rice, beans and garri so nothing goes to waste
Buying staples in bulk only saves money if they stay good. Easy ways to keep weevils, damp and pests out of your pantry.

Buying rice, beans and garri in larger quantities is cheaper per kilo, but only if they keep. A bag that gets damp or full of weevils is money thrown away. A few simple habits keep your staples in good shape for months.
Keep them dry and off the floor
Moisture is the main enemy. Store bags and containers on a shelf or a pallet, never directly on a concrete floor, and away from the kitchen sink and outside walls that get damp in the rainy season.
Use airtight containers
Once a bag is open, move what you are not using into clean, dry containers with tight lids. Plastic buckets with lids, large jars or sealed food containers all work. Label them with the date you filled them.
Keep beans away from weevils
Beans are the most likely to get weevils. Check them when they arrive, keep them sealed, and use the oldest first. Many households also add a few dried bay leaves or dried pepper to the container, which people find helps keep insects away.
Garri needs to stay completely dry
Garri absorbs moisture easily and can turn lumpy or sour. Always close the container straight after use and never put a wet spoon in it.
First in, first out
When you buy more, put the new stock at the back and move the older stock to the front. It sounds small, but it is the habit that stops a forgotten bag at the back of the cupboard from going bad.
If something smells off, looks mouldy or has a lot of insects, do not eat it. When in doubt, throw it out.
