Back-to-school breakfasts that keep children going until break
Quick, filling breakfasts for busy school mornings, made from things you probably already have in the house.

School mornings are a rush, and a breakfast that is gone in an hour leaves children hungry and distracted long before break time. These ideas are quick, filling and made from everyday staples.
Pap or oats with milk and groundnuts
Warm pap (akamu) or oats made with milk is quick and comforting. Add a handful of groundnuts or a sliced banana to make it more filling.
Bread and egg
Scrambled or boiled eggs with bread is a classic for a reason: it is fast and keeps children full. Add some tomato and onion to the egg if there is time.
Leftover-friendly options
Last night's beans or yam porridge, warmed up, makes a solid breakfast. So does fried plantain with egg. There is no rule that breakfast has to be special breakfast food.
Make mornings easier the night before
A few minutes in the evening saves a lot of stress in the morning:
- Boil eggs for two or three days at once
- Set out bowls, cups and the cereal or oats
- Pack the lunch box and water bottle
- Decide breakfast before bed, not at 6:30 am
Water first
A cup of water with breakfast and a full bottle in the school bag goes a long way, especially on hot days.
This is general information. If your child has allergies or a health condition, follow the advice of their doctor.
